A Century Ago...

Hard to believe its been over one hundred years since Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae wrote "In Flanders Fields" (3 May 1915).  And how it still seems to resonate with people on Remembrance Day.

Please take a few minutes to remember all the men and women who have died while serving their country and all who came home in body if not spirit. Not all wounds are visible. Thank you for everything. We will never forget.

Back to the Future II...Today

After a few years of jackass's putting up fake 'today's the day Marty McFly went into the future' posts along with accompanying altered screen shots we have finally arrived.

Today IS the day Marty, Jennifer and Doc Brown traveled 30 years into the future in the movie "Back to the Future II".

Notice the date. 21 October 2015...Thursday??
Must be proof this is an alternate future.

It's always fun to look around at all the things they got wrong or right or came close. No hoverboards, Mr. Fusion or flying cars, but even though it is represented in 1980's technology, the multiple channels on TV and face to face communication (and the fact that his boss is monitoring him) all sound a little familiar. The rise of 3-D movies, the communication/gaming headsets the McFly kids wear, very similar to Google Glass and Oculus Rift, right down to the gang's arrest being filmed by the media with a drone.

That's always the trick about speculating about the future. Many shows have done this over the years. Just take a look at the 'futuristic PADD's from "Star Trek The Next Generation". I have something similar sitting on my desk and one even smaller and thinner that I keep in my pocket.

But that can also be the cool thing about creating a future world. Fond memories of these imagined futures spark the creativity in young future designers and of the inventions of tomorrow.

Best thing I have seen in weeks

I have seen all kinds of cool stuff in the last few weeks. Videos, TV shows, movies. But I think this just might be the neatest thing I have seen in a few weeks. It just made me smile.

Footage from Star Trek (TOS), made into a video for William Shatner's "Common People", from his album "Has Been" - released 2004. Just brilliant.

Winter is ...Coming?

"April showers bring forth May flowers". Or so the old saying goes. This is what we here in Edmonton woke up to this morning.

What could cause this kind of weather so far into Spring? Global warming messing with the weather patterns, a simple weather anomaly created by some cold front being pulled down from the north, or maybe the last gasp of the Progressive Conservatives collective psyche. lashing out one last time. Whatever the cause, we that live in the North are no stranger to these odd weather occurrences.

My own theory. Only one thing I can think of causes this kind of sudden cold weather...new neighbours are coming.

...now where did i put that piece of dragon glass.

May The 4th Be With You!

Happy Star Wars day to all the fans of that "galaxy far far away" that George Lucas introduced us to all those years ago.

It's a pretty good time to be a Star Wars fan. The first of a new batch of movies is due out in December, the "Star Wars; Rebels" TV show seems to be doing well, as well as Marvel putting out a whole bunch of new Star Wars comics.

While there are lots of cool stories and ideas form the "expanded universe" that I will miss as these new movies re-write the story, I just have to remind myself that just because they won't be considered canon any longer that doesn't mean that they aren't good stories. Never the less, its still a good time to be a lover of all things Star Wars.

R.I.P. Leonard Nimoy

As a old long time fan of Star Trek I was very sad to here of the passing of Mr, Leonard Nimoy,

A talented actor, he suffered the same problem of type casting that many other actors on the show did. Maybe to a greater degree more because the character of Mr. Spock was so iconic and connected with the show. Many will forget he was also a successful director, singer and photographer. One more of the original crew gone. Farewell Mr. Spock....you will be missed.
