2017 - Happy New Year!

Congratulations! Hears to another successful trip around the sun. That was a bumpy one, like riding in old buggy down a precarious logging road off a mountain kind of bumpy. Lots of good, both in the world and personally for myself and my family. Lots of bad. Lots of weird...lots and lots of weird. And sadly, lots of loss.

I was listening to the radio a couple of weeks ago. the discussion was, as is common this time of year, the year that was and all the upheaval of 2016. They were talking to some expert (historian I believe) about his thoughts on the last year and he had an interesting thought. He said we are entering a new renaissance, and that just like in the fourteenth century, there was lots of public, political and social upheaval. Lots of push back by many to retain the old ways. I guess they wanted to make middle ages 'Great Again'.

So as 2017 begins I like to think of it all in that way, we are in a transitional time, moving from what we were to what we will become.

Remembrance Day 2014

Spent a great deal of time today thinking. Thinking about the men and women serving our country, both past and present. My great uncle who fought in "The Great War" before we had the misfortune to start numbering them. To my wife, a twenty year vet with three tours to Afghanistan, and my son who has been a service member for about a year and a half, as well as the many friends of our family both retired and still active. Thank you.

A sad thought also. One hundred years ago today, November 11, 1914, many of the family's of the young men who went overseas to fight were expecting their fathers, sons and brothers home soon. At the outbreak of the war just 3 and a half months earlier, the thought was this would be over in a couple of months and the men would be home in time for Christmas. The true horror of what was to come had not really hit home yet.

One of the more thought provoking things this year was this artistic display outside the Tower of London. A ceramic poppy for every British and Commonwealth soldier killed during World War I.

Two Weeks To Go!

Two weeks tonight is Halloween!
Probably the most beloved and favorite holiday of all of my kids. And they are all well past the trick-or-treat age.

This time of year always makes me think of bad weather (I vividly remember taking my kids out in a foot of snow one year), and my wife being away. She is retired from the Military now, but while she was in, it seemed that every year there would be an exercise scheduled for the end of October and she would be in the field.
